Safe Hubs

This project supports the emotional health and well-being of children and young people by providing safe, welcoming hubs where they can access targeted interventions, resources, and support. By building resilience, strengthening self-esteem, and promoting positive coping strategies, the project creates a nurturing environment that helps young people manage life’s challenges and improve their overall well-being
Project completed in partnership with:

The Early Intervention Safe Hubs project supports the emotional health and well-being of children and young people by providing safe, trusted spaces where they can access timely and tailored support. Delivered in partnership across local areas, the hubs offer a warm and welcoming environment where young people are given the time and space to talk, reflect, and build resilience.

Each hub works through a relationship-based model, ensuring that young people are listened to, understood, and supported before any formal assessment or intervention begins. This early connection is key to building trust and increasing engagement. From here, young people may access a range of personalised support options including one-to-one therapeutic sessions, creative group activities, or practical guidance focused on emotional regulation, confidence and life skills.

The project also includes a universal offer, ‘Empower & Connect’, which brings young people together in inclusive, positive environments to explore their identity, strengths and aspirations. Through these sessions, participants are encouraged to develop healthy coping strategies, emotional literacy and a sense of connection with others.

Referrals into the hubs are simple and flexible, with a single point of access available for schools, health partners, families or young people themselves. By working closely with local networks and drawing on the strengths of community partners, the project ensures that support doesn’t end at the door. Where appropriate, young people are connected to wider opportunities including mentoring, youth provision and positive activities, helping to build lasting change.

The Early Intervention Safe Hubs are designed to reduce emotional distress, prevent escalation of need and help young people feel safer, more confident and better equipped to navigate life’s challenges. Every element of the project is informed by the voice of young people and evaluated to ensure we continue to meet their needs in meaningful, responsive ways.

Helping a Young Person Rebuild Confidence Through Safe Hub Support

Some young people arrive at a Safe Hub carrying things that no one else can see. For this young person, it was constant anxiety. It shaped everything. Their days at school, their time at home, and the way they saw the world. At school, anxiety showed up as needing to leave the classroom again and again, sometimes every 30 minutes, to go to the toilet. It wasn’t a physical issue. It was the only way they knew how to cope with the overwhelming feelings that built up throughout the day. Learning felt impossible. Friendships became difficult. Confidence disappeared. Even outside school, things were hard. They avoided car journeys and refused to travel by train, terrified at the thought of not having access to a toilet. Life was shrinking around them and their parent felt powerless to help. When they were referred to the Safe Hub, things slowly began to change. The Safe Hub, delivered by our delivery partner CANW (Child Action North West), gave them something they hadn’t had in a long time. A calm and supportive space where they felt understood. No pressure. No judgement. Just someone to listen and gentle guidance at their pace. Through one-to-one sessions focused on managing anxiety, they began to understand what was happening in their body and mind. They learned how to name their worries, notice unhelpful patterns, and try small steps to feel more in control. The sessions were built around trust and that trust made all the difference. By the fifth session, they were lighter. More open. They shared that the strategies were helping and that they finally felt like they had some tools to manage things. It showed not just in their words but in the way they engaged. Calmer. More present. More themselves. The Safe Hub did not just help them feel better in the moment. It gave them something lasting. The belief that things could be different and the support to begin making that a reality.
