BWD – Mental Health and Suicide Prevention Training and Engagement

Project completed in partnership with:

Spring North is proud to be working in partnership with Re-Align Futures CIC to deliver Blackburn with Darwen’s All-Age Mental Health and Suicide Prevention Strategy (2025–2030). Together, we are helping to create a borough where people feel confident discussing mental health, seeking help, and supporting one another with care and understanding. Re-Align Futures has extensive experience in delivering accredited, evidence-based training on mental health, wellbeing, and suicide prevention. Their inclusive and trauma-informed approach ensures that training reaches all parts of the community, from carers and volunteers to professionals and employers. Through this partnership, we are developing a cohesive, community-led approach that empowers people with the skills and confidence to identify distress early, initiate safe conversations, and connect others to support when it is needed most.

“Before this training, I wasn’t sure what to say or do if someone seemed in crisis. Now I understand the signs to look out for and how powerful just listening can be.”

Peer Support Quality Mark

The Kitemark will help bring people together around shared values: care, compassion, and hope. It will emphasise where support is strong, where connections are forming, and where we are collaborating to prevent suicide and promote mental health and wellbeing.

Orange Button Scheme

The Orange Button scheme is a way of showing others in your community who are having thoughts of suicide, or are worried about somebody else, that you are comfortable talking about suicide, can listen without judgement and can direct people to help support.

Suicide Prevention Training

Our delivery partner Realign Futures provides suicide prevention training to support individuals, organisations, and communities to recognise and respond to suicide risk. Our training includes ASIST, a two-day course that builds practical suicide intervention skills, and safeTALK, an awareness session focused on identifying risk and connecting people to appropriate support.

How the Orange Button Helped Me Support a Tenant in Crisis

Lisa, a housing officer in Blackburn with Darwen, meets people every day who are under real pressure from rent arrears to worries about eviction and feelings of isolation. After finishing the Orange Button suicide awareness training, Lisa said it changed how she handles those difficult conversations. Before the training, I sometimes felt stuck when someone became upset or hinted at struggling. I wanted to help, but I wasn’t sure how,” she explains. “Now, I feel calmer and more confident in starting those conversations even when they’re difficult. Recently, Lisa supported a tenant who mentioned feeling hopeless after losing their job. Thanks to what she learned, she was able to listen without judgment, ask the right questions, and guide them to local support services. It reminded me that simply being there and showing you care can make a huge difference,” she said. “The Orange Button isn’t just a badge — it’s a reminder that help is closer than people think.”
