A new report warns that England could face up to six million new cancer cases by 2040, with parts of the North West among those expected to be most affected.
In response, Spring North is working with the Lancashire and South Cumbria Integrated Care Board Cancer Alliance to launch a Cancer Awareness, Screening, and Early Diagnosis Initiative across the region, including a VCFSE-led Small Grants Scheme for Cancer Education and Engagement.
The scheme will provide grants of up to £10,000 to support community-led projects, enabling local organisations and charities to play a direct role in reducing health inequalities and improving cancer outcomes.
Projects will focus on cancers where early detection is crucial, specifically lung, bowel, and pancreatic cancers. Local groups are encouraged to develop initiatives that raise awareness of lifestyle factors linked to cancer risk, promote screening and early recognition of symptoms, equip communities with the knowledge to take preventive steps, and build sustainable partnerships between health and community organisations.
The scheme is aimed at underserved communities, where health inequalities remain most visible. By supporting grassroots organisations to deliver focused awareness and education, Spring North and the Cancer Alliance aim to empower local people to take early action and access vital screening services.
Martin Hartley-Smith, Chief Executive at Spring North, said:”The statistics highlight the scale of the challenge we face, but we also recognise the importance of early diagnosis. By supporting local, community-led projects, we can raise awareness where it matters most and give people the tools to act sooner. This initiative aims to save lives and reduce inequalities across the region and in our communities. Working with and supporting our VCFSE members will allow us to align their efforts with NHS priorities and make a greater impact.”
Applications for the Small Grants Scheme are now open, with funded projects running for up to six months. At the end of the funding period, groups will share their findings and recommendations to help shape future cancer awareness and education work across Lancashire and South Cumbria.
