Spring North Supports South Asian Communities through Cancer Champions

Spring North has launched a new community-led project to raise awareness of cancer and improve early diagnosis across Blackburn with Darwen. The Cancer Champions project, funded by Macmillan Cancer Support, focuses on supporting South Asian communities through trusted local volunteers.

The three-year initiative is being delivered in partnership with IMO and One Voice. Together, the organisations are training local people to become Cancer Champions, equipping them to have open and culturally sensitive conversations about cancer and help others feel more confident accessing support.

Many people from South Asian backgrounds face barriers to early diagnosis, including stigma, language, and myths about cancer. As a result, they are less likely to attend screening appointments and more likely to be diagnosed at a later stage. This project is designed to change that by building trust and starting important conversations within communities.

Martin Hartley-Smith, Chief Executive of Spring North, said:
“Many people still feel afraid to talk about cancer, and that fear leads to delays in getting support. This project is about breaking down stigma, building trust, and ensuring no one feels they have to face cancer alone.”

Cancer Champions are already out in their communities, offering reassurance, sharing information, and signposting to local services. All volunteers receive training, translated resources, and ongoing support. Their work is already making a difference in local mosques, community centres, shops and homes.

Jade Bond, Project Manager at Spring North, added:
“You don’t need to be a health professional to make an impact. You just need to be trusted in your community and willing to start the conversation.”

This work is part of Spring North’s wider mission to improve health outcomes, reduce inequalities, and support long-term community resilience.
