The “Child Safety in the Community” project is dedicated to preventing avoidable deaths in children within vulnerable families. Our objective is to empower Community Champions with the necessary tools to engage with at-risk communities and establish a network of support and knowledge. This initiative aims to create a community that is well-informed, better equipped, and capable of ensuring the safety of children at home while being vigilant and responsive to potential risks.
As part of the champions’ training, they will receive a comprehensive toolkit within our delivery model. This toolkit is designed to facilitate effective communication with service users, community members, and other partners. Champions will actively seek feedback to assess the success and delivery of the project. Key components of their role include:
Consultation:
Engaging in active dialogue with community members to seek advice on planned interventions.
Consulting with Community Champions to identify innovative and effective ways to convey essential safety messages to targeted communities.
Participation:
Collaborating with broader and targeted communities to identify problems and implement solutions.
Empowering communities to co-identify challenges and supporting them in implementing locally owned and feasible solutions for sustained and accessible child safety.
Community Empowerment:
Liaising extensively with community members and grassroots organisations to understand challenges.
Involving communities in local child safety issues, utilising community structures for service provision.
In line with the consultation, participation, and empowerment framework, Community Champions will actively communicate what works, what doesn’t, and suggest improvements. This feedback will contribute to informed system changes for the project.
The Community Champions will play a crucial role in existing pathways, offering effective services in community-based settings. Emphasising information sharing, awareness raising, and outreach, the focus is on early prevention activities to support safe child management and reduce the likelihood of late interventions or admissions due to acute safety concerns.
By implementing these strategies, the “Child Safety in the Community” project seeks to build a resilient and informed community that actively works towards preventing unnecessary deaths in children from vulnerable families.
