Stable Lives – CMHT

Project completed in partnership with:
The Spring North CMHT project works with a range of VCFSE organisations to provide mental health support for adults in their local communities. This project is part of the Lancashire & South Cumbria ICB’s long term plan to transform Community Mental Health services across the region.

Through the CMHT Grant Fund, we are proud to support Stable Lives, a distinguished charity that has made significant strides in mental health support across Lancashire for over a decade. Their commitment to aiding individuals grappling with severe mental health issues aligns with the CMHT mission to foster community well-being and resilience. The charity’s holistic programs have been instrumental in preventing suicides and self-harm, aiding addiction recovery, and facilitating the reintegration of adults into the workforce and education.

Stable Lives has launched an innovative project offering two 5-week group courses for up to 25 adults experiencing significant mental health crises. These courses, held once a week, leverage equine and land-based activities to bolster confidence, self-esteem, and self-worth, while also enhancing emotional control, resilience, and social skills. Participants engage in a curriculum leading to a basic stable management certificate, recognised within the industry, culminating in a certificate upon completion.

A unique aspect of the program is the pairing of each participant with a rescue horse or pony, fostering a bond that serves as a conduit for discussing vital wellness topics such as nutrition, exercise, rest, and personal development. This approach not only aids in the recovery of the animals but also mirrors the healing journey of the participants, encouraging them to implement positive changes and strategies in their own lives.

The overarching goal of these courses is to empower individuals to acknowledge the influence of their past and present circumstances without allowing them to hinder their future prospects. The courses are expertly led by Carrie Byrom, the charity’s director, who has been honoured with an MBE for her contributions to mental health in the North West.

Together with the Lancashire and South Cumbria Integrated Care Board, we are committed to ensuring that Stable Lives continues to make a profound impact on the lives of those facing mental health challenges and financial difficulties.
